The arthroscopic surgery is performed using a small optical instrument of 3 to 4 mm of diameter, an arthroscope, which is is inserted into the joint through a small incision about 1 cm long.
This fiber optic is connected to a video system that allows the surgeon to explore the whole joint area on a video monitor.
The instruments used to perform the surgical arthroscopy are, them too, introduced in the joint through a small incision.
Thus, the surgeon can perform a diagnosis by exploring the joint cavity and on the same time perform a therapeutical act thanks to the appropriate miniature instruments.
